Northern America

Idaho, a state in the Northwestern region of the United States. Its name was probably derived from the Indian word for “light or jewel of the mountains” (Ee-dah-how). The Native Americans called it that because almost every known type of gemstone had been found here.

The largest city in Idaho is its capital Boise with many interesting sights. But not only the larger cities but also the Rocky Mountains with their beautiful landscape are popular.

Idaho was admitted to the Union on July 3, 1890 as the 43rd state. A well-known personality from Idaho is the writer Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) who lives and died here in Ketchum.

Climate in Idaho

Although the state’s western border is approximately 350 miles from the Pacific Ocean, Idaho still retains a maritime influence. This is especially noticeable in winter, when it’s not quite as cold as in the usual northern states. Hot summer days are usually tempered by relatively low humidity and cooler evenings.
